- **⚠ Tesla software 2026.20 (rolling out May 2026) enables USB clip encryption by default.** Encrypted clips can only be decrypted via Tesla's online viewer and cannot currently be recovered by Sentry Recovery. Clips recorded before the update remain fully recoverable. To keep new recordings recoverable, disable the "Encrypt USB" option in your Tesla's Dashcam settings.

Sentry Recovery (v1.8.1) is specialised data recovery software built only for Tesla footage. Formatting a Tesla USB drive only erases the file system index — the video data is physically still on the drive until those sectors are overwritten. Sentry Recovery scans raw disk sectors for MP4 signatures (bypassing the file system entirely), so it finds deleted clips that don't show up in the file browser. It also detects and, where possible, reassembles fragmented clips whose data is scattered in non-contiguous pieces across the drive. It recognises every Tesla camera position on both hardware generations (6 on AI4/HW4 cars — front, back, left repeater, right repeater, left pillar, right pillar; 4 on pre-2023 AI3/HW3 cars, which have no pillar cameras), recovers original Tesla filenames where they survive, identifies camera angles with an on-device AI vision model when filenames have been overwritten, and scores every recovered clip 0–100 for integrity. 100% on-device — your footage never leaves your computer.
